Jessica Nifa Andayi
Jessica, a resident in Kibera’s Soweto East village, lives with her husband and six children. She has lived and worked in Kibera since 1999. In 1977 she moved from the western part of Kenya, where she was born, with the intention of finding a job in Nairobi. After struggling for a long time without a job, she decided to engage in day-to-day manual laundry work for middle class people, earning a small fee that would keep her going. From this income she has been able to take care of her family with the small support from her husband who is also a casual laborer. In 2008, she joined the Kiki weavers group, where she was trained to weave baskets from water hyacinth, which is harvested from Nairobi Dam.
