Sibel Tan was born into a family of 10 in an area with the highest unemployment rates in Turkey. Her family struggled to make a living, so she moved to Istanbul and became a child laborer under very difficult conditions. When she came to the realization that her wages were too low to help support her family, she moved back to her village in southeastern Anatolia and joined a CATOM social education center for women’s empowerment in her village where she learned shawl weaving. After being trained as an artisan, she became the breadwinner for her family. She used some of her earnings to learn to read, write, and put herself through primary school. Sibel currently is a master artisan in her craft and looks after her family as well as her sister and her 5 children.
